CVI Pilot Project in Quebec

CIEL is currently developing the CVI for a 2005-2006 pilot phase with the assistance of its Quebec Delivery Agent, Resort to Work of Wakefield Québec.. CIEL has partnered with the Community Table and other Quebec and national organizations to develop the tool, test it in three rural Quebec linguistic minority communities, and provide a catalyst for tangible actions to improve community vitality. Guiding the development of the tool is the advisory committee, whose membership includes the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), Statistics Canada and a number of organizations inside and outside Quebec.

The CVI will allow communities to benchmark themselves and compare themselves to other communities using CIEL’s unique graphs and scoring. In addition, the statistics will allow a community to assess whether their perceptions are indeed realistic.

Community members will be encouraged to participate through meetings or via on-line technology as well as other methods to increase the innovative and technological capacity of the communities. Reports will be used to identify and choose short and long-term actions and local projects with socio-economic outcomes.

The CVI is funded by Canada Economic Development in Quebec, Community Economic Development Technical Assistance Program (CEDTAP), Bell Canada, and the McConnell Foundation.

La Pêche GIS Community Mapping Society

RISC is a co-sponsor (with Wakefield Ensemble) of a Sustainable Communities Initiative project funded by Natural Resources Canada project in partnership with the CLD des Collines to boost local skills and community projects via community-based GIS digital mapping and training resources. We offer free GPS and GIS training for individuals and not-for-profit organizations to learn how these tools can provide more informed decision-making, improved planning processes and help implement local project opportunities.
